The first thing my search this week turned up was a study that was done on personal learning environments (PLEs) and the effects that PLEs have on students' higher order thinking skills. The study was conducted with a test designed to assess higher order thinking skills. I-Google Portal & Blackboard were used, the PLE students used I-Google while the other group used Blackboard. They study found that students using the PLEs were much more satisfied with their learning and scored higher on the test. My only complaint with the study is that two different online platforms were used but this may be because Blackboard might not be able to support PLEs or I-Google Portal might only be able to support PLEs. While I feel this is a good study I still would have liked to have seen the same online platform used for both groups (if possible) because that would make a stronger case for the strength of PLEs.

Hi Chris! I really feel like I'm getting to know your dogs. So cute. I like your background too. So eye catching. Great intro--I know just what you mean! I'm brand new to PLEs. So thanks for the info! Very interesting about Hong Kong. I always had the impression that they were leaders in bilingual education. I am reminded about an article I read last week that said that Taiwan was making a move to make English the official language there. That article stated that it was seen as a political move away from China. Hmm, interesting contrast! Is it language wars? You say the article was unsubstantiated. Maybe press wars? I must look into it! Thanks for the thoughts!

ReplyDeleteMy school district is trying to work toward the implementation of PLE's in the near future. Our new superintendent has adopted as his personal mission the idea that our school will provide students with their "First Choice." This means we would provide learning opportunities that are tailored to each individual student which will allow them to pursue their "First Choice" in careers or colleges in their future. I think creating PLE's for/with students is a great idea, but I am a little skeptical about using them with middle schoolers (or younger students) because of their lack of motivation in school. I know PLE's are supposed to be designed to motivate and engage students, but I still think we would have several kids in my school that would refuse to do anything, even if it was personalized to their needs/likes. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteI like you are using games in your class. It is an important technique that needs to be developed and used more frequently in ESL classrooms. It will make learning more exciting. Since most ESL learning happens in the classrooms gamification can easily be incorporated. Regardless of class size, when you include games in an ESL classroom, students will learn more easily and be less conscious that they are learning a new language.
